Edgar Rice Burroughs : The adventures of Captain John Carter
Less sinister are the inhabitants of Mars in the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs , who is widely known for his Tarzan stories. Less well known but surely not less fun, are the adventures of Captain John Carter in the 20's and 30's on Mars. Burroughs wisely keeps the way how Carter got there very vague.Once got there on the planet (the planet is called Barsoom by its inhabitants), Carter reveals as a true hero, he starts a battle with the Great White Apes and marries a very beautiful Red Princess.
Later, (in the next stories) he got involved with the Black Man (who are extemely bad). In each story, new and bad people are discovered, but there are also always friends. Those who loves Winnetou, Old Shatterhand, Eric de Viking and of course Tarzan, surely will not be disappointed with the Carter stories.
Scientifc, the stories does not represent much, not even in the time when they were written. The most wild imaginations of Percival Lowell are nothing compared to what RIce |

Burroughs, surpisingly again and again can think up. One of the remarkable commets of Burroughs is that Mars has a larger land surface than earth has despite Earth is larger than Mars is. Reason for this is of course that the surface of Earth is covered by water for two third while this is not present on Mars.
Burroughs' Mars is dying. One can only live ther because of the existance of large airfactories who are filling up the atmosphere. Those air factories are the remainings of an ancient civilisation. |
